# Add graphics

### ❓ What is it?

Motion graphics make a talking-head video easier to follow and more fun to watch: a number that counts up as it's said, a checklist that ticks itself off, a quick comparison, a name tag, a map pin. Making them by hand takes hours.

**Add graphics** listens to your video, finds the moments that deserve a graphic, and designs one for each. You review them in FireCut, change anything you like, and add the ones you keep to your sequence.

### 🤔 How does it work?

1. **Choose a style** (theme, layout and colours), how many graphics you want, and which part of your sequence to look at.
2. Click **Analyze video**. FireCut finds the key moments and starts designing a graphic for each one.
3. The **review screen** opens straight away, and each graphic appears as soon as it's ready. You can preview, edit, redo or remove each one.
4. Click **Render graphics**. Each graphic you kept is added to your sequence at its moment.

Each graphic is one of three layouts:

* **Overlay:** sits over your footage, placed around the speaker's face
* **Full screen:** takes over the whole frame for a moment
* **Split screen:** your footage slides to one side and the graphic fills the other

### ⚙️ Settings

1. **Theme:** The look of every graphic: **Paper**, **Editorial** or **Pop Art**. You can change it later in the review screen.
2. **Layout:** **Auto** lets FireCut choose for each graphic. **Full screen** or **Overlay** uses that layout for all of them.
3. **Footage effects:** Lets graphics change your footage when it helps: blur or darken it behind a graphic, zoom into it, or slide it aside for a split screen. These effects go on a separate Adjustment Layer track under the graphics, so your actual footage is never changed, and you can delete them at any time. Turn this off if you only want the graphics.
4. **Primary color / Secondary color:** Your brand colors. **Auto** uses the theme's own colors. **Custom** lets you pick yours.
5. **Frequency:** How many graphics to suggest: **Low**, **Medium** or **High**.
6. **Scope:** Analyze your **Full sequence**, or only the part between your **In / Out points** (set them with the `I` and `O` hotkeys).
7. **Audio language:** The language spoken in your video. Graphics support left-to-right languages for now.
8. **Guidance prompt:** Custom spellings for names, brands and technical terms, so they're spelled correctly in your graphics. For example, if your transcript shows "fire cut", enter "FireCut" here. Click the **\[+]** button to save it as a preset for next time.

### 👀 Reviewing your graphics

The review screen shows each graphic playing over a frame from your video, at the moment it will appear.

* **Move between graphics** with the arrow buttons, or click a thumbnail at the bottom. Premiere's playhead moves to each graphic's moment.
* **Keep:** Untick it to leave a graphic out. Only kept graphics are rendered.
* **Edit:** Change a graphic without starting again: its layout, theme, colors, footage effect, where each part sits, and every piece of text. The preview updates as you go, and **Reset** puts it back as it was.
* **Redo:** Asks FireCut to design the graphic again. Click a quick option (such as **Shorter text**, **Simpler** or **Different graphic**), or describe the change you want, e.g. "make it red". You'll see the current vs. redesigned version in a split screen before choosing to accept/reject the changes.
* **Style:** Changes the theme, layout or colors of all your graphics at once.
* **Update frame:** Puts the frame at Premiere's playhead behind the graphic on show, and lays the graphic out around the face in that frame. Use it if a graphic covers the speaker.

#### Adding them to your sequence

* **Target track:** By default the graphics go on a new video track. If you pick an existing track, any clips where the graphics go are replaced (FireCut warns you first).
* **Save location:** Where the graphics' video files are saved: in your project directory, or a folder you choose.
* Click **Render graphics**. If footage effects are on, they're added on their own Adjustment Layer track just under the graphics.

Changed your mind? The **Undo** button at the top of FireCut takes your sequence back to how it was before the graphics were added.

### ✏️ Editing a graphic that's already on your timeline

Graphics are video files, but **FireCut can still edit them**:

1. Select the graphic on your timeline.
2. In **Add graphics**, click **Edit selected graphic**. It opens in the review screen as it was when it was added.
3. Make your changes with **Edit** or **Redo**.
4. Click **Regenerate graphic**. The new version replaces the original in the same place (and replaces its footage effects too).

### 💡 Tips for best outcomes

* **Try it on a short part first:** set In / Out points around a minute or two of your video.
* **Make sure your audio is clear**, and mute any music or sound effects tracks.
* **Remove silences and repeated takes first**, so graphics are timed to your final edit.
* **Check names and numbers** before rendering. If something was misheard, fix the text in **Edit**, or add the correct spelling to the guidance prompt before analyzing.
* **Don't work in the timeline** while FireCut is rendering and adding your graphics.

### 🙋‍♂️ Common questions, issues, watch-outs

* **"I can't see the graphics"** → They're added on a new video track at the top of your sequence, which can be hidden at the top of the timeline. Try scrolling up.
* **"A graphic covers my captions or titles"** → Graphics go on a track above your other clips. Move the graphic in **Edit** (change where its parts sit), or drag your captions track above the graphics. If footage effects are on, keep your captions above the graphics' Adjustment Layer track too, or they'll be blurred or zoomed along with the footage.
* **"A graphic covers the speaker's face"** → Move the playhead to a frame where the face is clearly visible, then click **Update frame**. Or change where the graphic's parts sit in **Edit**.
* **"A name or number is wrong"** → Fix the text in **Edit**. For names and brands, use the guidance prompt so they're spelled right next time.
* **"Edit selected graphic can't open my graphic"** → Make sure you've selected a graphic from Add graphics (not your footage), and that its file hasn't been moved or renamed. Graphics added before FireCut 1.2.36 can't be edited.
* **"The graphics' files are big"** → They're high-quality video files with transparency, so they take more space than normal video. Choose a **Save location** on a drive with plenty of room.
* **"It didn't work on my non-English video"** → Graphics support left-to-right languages for now. If something looks wrong in your language, please let us know at <support@firecut.ai>.
